Eagles keep future goals in mind by Nikki Johnston The Irene-Wakonda Eagles seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams took on the Hurley Bulldogs on Nov. 24 in Irene.
In the seventh-grade game the Eagles were big winners with a final score of 35-7. Leading the way for the team was Nicole Nielsen with 9 points, Kelli Johnston followed with 8, while Brittney Bakke and Tiffany Gleich each added 6.
In the eighth-grade game the Eagles battled hard but came up short with a final score of 26-20 in favor of the Bulldogs. Leading the way for the team was Natalie Schenk with 10 points.
On Monday, Dec. 1 the Eagles took on Centerville in Wakonda with both teams picking up a win.
The seventh-grade game finished with a score of 23-10 in favor of I-W. Taking charge of that game was Melanie Kathol with 10 points, while Johnston added 5 and Bakke contributed 4.
The eighth-grade won in a barnburner with a final score of 32-27. High scorers were Schenk with 13 points, Casey Hessman with 4 points, and Kerstin Roesler also with 4 points.
"The girls need to keep working hard, learn the game, enjoy the game, and we'll get to our goal of future success," said coach Rocky Johnston.
