Harrisburg rally defeats Vermillion freshman girls by Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshman Tanagers fell victim to a second-half rally and were defeated by the Harrisburg Tigers 28-20 in girls basketball Dec. 11 at Vermillion.
The VHS freshmen had led by one at halftime.
The season-opening loss gave the VHS freshmen a record of 0-1 while Harrisburg moved to 1-0.
"With the absence of Chelsea Gauer, the girls were forced to play out of position and had different roles than what they're used to in practice," said VHS freshman coach Heather Walker. "Anna Isaacson took on the primary ball handling responsibilities and worked very hard. She finished the night with eight points and six rebounds."
The Tanagers fell behind 5-2 after the first quarter, led 9-8 after the second quarter, and then trailed 22-14 going into the fourth quarter.
The VHS freshmen connected on 6 of 8 from the line. The Tanagers hit 7 of 30 field goal attempts, while Harrisburg was 13 of 36 from the field. The Tigers made 2 of 4 free throw tries.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
"Kinsey Weydert did some very nice things, going 6-8 from the FT line and really kept our team in the game with her effort," coach Walker said. "The coaching staff was pleased with the effort considering the player adjustments and personnel situation."
