Last minute shot leads to Vermillion win by Jim Prosser Bobby Punt made a lay-up on a feed from Kyle Brunick with 30 seconds left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers fought to a stubborn tug-of-war victory over South Sioux City 45-44 in boys' basketball Dec. 19 at South Sioux City.
The Vermillion JV had trailed by one after the third quarter.
"Bobby's score gave us a three point lead," said Vermillion JV coach Jon Ruevers of the clinching moment. "South Sioux City made one of two free throws and time ran out."
The Vermillion JV remained unbeaten at 3-0. The SSC season mark fell to 2-3.
Randy Kabambi scored 19 points, pulled down nine rebounds and blocked two shots.
"He made an excellent contribution to our win," said coach Ruevers.
The Tanagers jumped in front 9-6 at the end of the first period, the score was 20-20 at halftime, and the Tanagers trailed 34-33 going into the fourth quarter.
The Tanagers picked up the victory in spite of committing 20 turnovers.
"Our intensity was there but we were lucky to salvage a last second victory in spite of 20 turnovers," said coach Ruevers. "We need to protect the ball better!"
The Vermillion JV sank 1 of 4 three-pointers and hit 8 of 15 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 18 of 30 field goals, while SSC was 16 of 29 from the field. SSC sank 2 of 8 three-point tries and sank 10 of 17 free throw tries.
The close win had several contributors to the cause.
"Kyle Brunick tied the score 43-43 with a 3-point goal," coach Ruevers said. "He also had five assists and three steals."
