Second half effort is key to JV victory by Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls' junior varsity Tanagers pulled away in the second half to overcome the Harrisburg Tigers 48-30 in basketball Dec. 11 at Vermillion in a win keyed by an 18-3 third-quarter edge.
The season-opening win gave Vermillion JV a record of 1-0 while Harrisburg fell to 0-1.
"Heather Walker had been battling a cold all week long and came on very strong, leading her team with 13 points and 11 rebounds," said Vermillion JV coach Lenni Billberg. "Other standout players were Michelle Olson who had nine points and six rebounds in only two quarters of work and Patricia Merrigan who also finished with nine points."
The Tanagers led 11-8 after the opening period, led 20-17 after the second quarter, and then held a lead of 38-20 after the third quarter.
The Tanagers committed only 6 turnovers in the victory.
"Defensively, the girls played very hard; with the score 20-17 at half they outscored Harrisburg 18-3 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach," said coach Billberg. "Offensively, our girls played very physical and did a very nice job of getting the ball inside which really opens up our other kids on the perimeter. We were very pleased with the overall effort. Our kids played like champs!"
The Vermillion JV made 1 of 5 three-point tries and sank 9 of 14 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 19 of 46 field goal attempts, while Harrisburg was 12 of 36 from the field. Harrisburg made 0 of 8 three-point attempts and hit 6 of 19 from the line.
