Tanager freshmen rally to beat Tigers by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers rallied to defeat the Harrisburg Tigers 38-31 in boys' basketball Dec. 12 at Harrisburg in a win capped by a 16-3 fourth-quarter surge.
The Vermillion freshmen had trailed by six going into the final period.
Jeff Donnelly scored 19 points � 11 in the fourth quarter.
The Tanagers trailed 9-5 after the opening period, trailed 18-12 at halftime, and then trailed 28-22 after the third period.
"Our intensity on defense and rebounding increased as the game went on," said Vermillion freshmen coach Kelly Knutson. "Defensively, our team shut down Harrisburg in the fourth quarter."
The Vermillion freshmen now have a record of 1-0, while Harrisburg fell to 0-1.
The Vermillion freshmen hit 3 of 5 three-pointers and connected on 7 of 11 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 14 of 38 field goal attempts, while Harrisburg was 13 of 35 from the field. Harrisburg sank 3 of 9 three-point tries.
The close win had several contributors to the cause.
"Ryan Scheidel, Bobby Dykstra and Andrew Pearson did an excellent job in the second half of defending much larger players, and Ryan Powell was very reliable handling the ball," coach Knutson said.
