Tanagers pour it on, beat Harrisburg 53-40 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers pulled away in the last stanza to down the Harrisburg Tigers 53-40 in boys' basketball Dec. 12 at Harrisburg in a win ignited by a strong first half.

The Vermillion JV had led by only five heading into the final quarter.

The season-opening win gave Vermillion JV a record of 1-0 while Harrisburg fell to 0-1.

Randy Kabambi scored 16 points.

The Tanagers jumped ahead 18-12 at the end of the first period, led 31-16 after the second quarter, and then led 39-34 going into the final period.

"The team played very well the first time out," said Vermillion JV coach Jon Ruevers. "There are many aspects to improve on. We had balanced scoring from our starters."

Vermillion JV made 2 of 6 three-point tries and connected on 5 of 15 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 23 of 42 from the field, while Harrisburg was 17 of 38 from the field. Harrisburg sank 4 of 10 three-pointers and hit 2 of 3 free throw attempts.

The Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.

"Kyle Brunick and Andrew Pier each scored 11 points," coach Ruevers said. "They performed well throughout the contest."
