USD men sweep, women split double dual meet The South Dakota men's swimming and diving team swept a pair of duals at the St. Cloud State, South Dakota State and South Dakota double dual in Brookings, on Friday night. The USD women's team split its two duals.
The South Dakota men's team improved to 7-1 in duals this season. The USD women are now 6-2. The men's team defeated St. Cloud State, 96-94, and defeated SDSU, 110-74. The women's team defeated SDSU, 110-69, while dropping a 107-83 decision to St. Cloud State.
In total, the USD men's team had six first titles, including the 400 medley relay, which finished first in 3:45.13. The squad included Ryan Malone (Lincoln, NE), Jason Burke (Bellevue, NE), Bram Olson (Hutchinson, MN), and John Murman (Lincoln, NE).
Garth Meacham of West Des Moines, IA, won the 1,000 free with a clocking of 10:15.92 with teammate Kyle Anderson of Portland, OR, second in 10:26.07.
Olson captured the 50 free in 21.68. USD had three of the top four places in the event. Tyler Scheer of Lincoln, NE, was third in 22.54 and Tim Byers of Billings, MT, fourth, in 22.65.
Another title winner was Murman, who was first in the 200 IM in 2:00.82. Also in the 200 IM, Chuck Scribner of Hastings, NE, finished third in 2:05.36 with Kyle Anderson coming in fourth in 2:05.83.
Jeremy Weed of Verona, WI, captured the 100 fly with a clocking of 54.37. In that same event, Scheer was second in 54.44 and Byers, third, in 55.16.
Dirk Craft of Palmer, AK, captured the 100 free in 48.54 with teammate Malone finishing third in 50.30.
Olson and Weed finished second (55.80) and third (56.44), respectively in the 100 back.
The USD women's team had five titles, including two by Abby Heinz of Sgt. Bluff, IA. Heinz won the 100 fly in 1:00.46 and the 200 (IM in 2:15.35. She picked up a third win as part of the victorious 400-medley relay that finished in 4:09.89. That squad included Theresa Eustice of Waseca, MN, Kari Kopecky of Roosevelt, MN, and Jill Stensby of Portland, OR.
Kopecky had a second win in the 50 free title, clocking a 25.45. In that same event, Angie Stalker of Sheridan, WY, was third in 26.14.
Audrey Donley of Arvada, CO, won the 1,000 free in 11:05.22 with teammate Lacey Liebmann of Crystal Lake, IL, third in 11:15.30.
In the women's 100 back, USD had three of the top five places, Brianna Wass of Douglas, WY, was third in 1:05.35 while Christine Byrne of Caguas, Puerto Rico, was fourth in 1:06.41 and Ashley Raymer-Schaper of Warroad, MN, fifth, in 1:06.63.
The USD swimming teams are on break until Jan. 10 when it returns to SDSU for a dual meet in Brookings.
