Vermillion clipped 58-56 by Lennox rally by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers fell just short in a furious second-half rally and were upset by the Lennox Orioles 58-56 in boys' basketball Dec. 16 at Lennox after falling prey to a 19-6 third-quarter deficit.
The Vermillion freshmen had trailed by 14 going into the final period.
Jeff Donnelly scored 20 points.
"Jeff kept us close in the first half all by himself, offensively and defensively," said Vermillion freshmen coach Kelly Knutson.
The Tanagers fell behind 13-10 after the first quarter, trailed 27-26 after the second quarter, and then trailed 46-32 after the third quarter.
"Our 56 points is a bit misleading; we didn't execute our offense the way we know how, but hot shooting in the fourth made the game look closer than it really was," said coach Knutson. "Defensively, we need a lot of practice."
The loss dropped the Vermillion freshmen to a record of 1-1, while LHS improved to 1-0.
The Vermillion freshmen made 6 of 14 three-pointers and connected on 8 of 15 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 21 of 42 field goal attempts, while LHS was 23 of 40 from the field. LHS hit 1 of 6 three-point tries and connected on 7 of 10 free throw tries.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
"Everyone came in and hustled, but we have to execute better on both ends of the court if we want to be successful," coach Knutson said.
