Vermillion settles for second in OT thriller The Vermillion eighth-grade boys' basketball team had an exciting climax at the DakotaDome Tournament this past weekend. The locals lost 41-33 in double overtime to Hinton, IA in the championship finals.
Hinton was 10 for 10 in free throws in both overtime periods, while Vermillion could only muster one basket. Vermillion led 21-19 at halftime with both teams finishing at 31 in regulation.
Jordan Boots led the offensive effort with 17 points including four 3-pointers. Other scorers were Broc Gauer 5, Dan Storm 4, C.J. Haakinson 4, Jordan Merrigan 2 and Jesse Kirkpatrick 1. It was truly a team-oriented rebounding effort as Merrigan led the way with six followed by Mikal Ustad and Haakinson with five. Storm and Gauer also had four apiece.
The semi-final game pitted the Tanagers against Bon Homme with Vermillion coming out on top 28-16. The Tanagers defense gave up only 5 points in the second half to control the victory.
Boots was the top scorer with 16 points. Haakinson controlled six boards the Kirkpatrick and Storm close behind with five rebounds.
The first game of the tourney found Kingsley-Pierson, IA severely overmatched as Vermillion won 42-21. Boots and Gauer provided the offense with 18 and 16 points respectively. Storm and Haakinson led in rebounds with eight and six each.
