'Kids in the Kitchen' is Feb. 7; event features food exploration The Clay County Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor a day-long workshop, "Kids in the Kitchen," for youth ages 8 to 19 on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the 4-H Center, Vermillion.
Th hands-on workshop will allow youth to explore the foods and nutrition, breads, food preservation and dairy foods project areas.
Area Extension educators will share what youth may enter in each of the above areas at the Clay County Fair 4-H and/or open class divisions, county achievement days, or at the S.D. State Fair.
The workshop will also cover what contest judges look for when judging a foods event and basic food and kitchen safety skills.
Youth participants will also be able to select two individual workshops to attend from the following offerings: Bread Machine Magic, Poster Pizzazz, Fun with Dairy Foods, Soy Now, Grow It and Preserve It and What's Special Foods. All participants will experience making a loaf of homemade yeast bread in the Bread in a Bag class. Cost for the day is $5, and is limited to the first 40 pre-registered youth.
