Lady Bulldogs edge Vermillion by Jim Prosser The Vermillion junior varsity Tanagers were edged by the Madison Lady Bulldogs 43-40 in girls' basketball Jan. 13 at Madison.
"After a very slow start, the young Tanager women battled to take the lead late in the fourth quarter," said Vermillion JV Coach Lenni Billberg. "However 5 of 15 free throw shooting in the fourth allowed the Bulldogs back in the game. With seven seconds left, the Bulldogs scored a breakaway lay-up to take the lead and the victory."
The Tanagers fell behind 4-2 after the first quarter, trailed 15-11 after the second quarter, and then trailed 30-25 going into the fourth quarter.
The Vermillion JV saw its record fall to 1-2, while MHS upped its mark to 3-1.
The Vermillion JV made 9 of 22 free throw tries while the Lady Bulldogs connected on 10 of 15 free throw tries.
The Tanagers had several noteworthy individual efforts in defeat.
"Stars for the Tanagers included Brittney Babb and Kinsey Weydert with 12 points each," coach Billberg said. "Babb also led with nine rebounds in only three quarters of play."
