Lady Tanagers roll over EP-J by Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers pulled away in the second half to roll over Elk Point-Jefferson 52-32 in girls' basketball Jan. 20 at Vermillion.
"Tonight was a very good team effort," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "Skinned knees and scraped elbows should be our motto. When we dive on the floor for loose balls and really get after people, it's a great thing to watch. That's the type of thing that we need to do so that we can be successful playing defense, forcing tough shots and getting after loose balls."
The Tanagers jumped in front 14-4 after the first quarter, led 26-22 at halftime, and then led 42-27 after the third period.
Each team now has a record of 3-6.
Vermillion sank 4 of 16 three-pointers and connected on 6 of 9 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 21 of 50 field goal attempts, while EP-J was 12 of 39 from the field. EP-J hit 2 of 12 three-point tries and connected on 6 of 13 free throw attempts.
A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.
"It's hard to pick a single stand out player for us tonight; offensively we were very balanced with three kids in double figures and a fourth with seven," coach Parish said. "Defensively we are forcing teams to take tough shots; if we can finish those possessions with a defensive rebound it will determine how much success we will have. I think the key component of tonight's game was our bench play. It's not always the amount of time that these girls give us, but rather when they give it to us.
"Ellen Odson, Kayla Mollet, Heather Walker, Alisha O'Connor, Brittney Babb and Paige Prosser all played a role during the game that got us through some stretches of time that kept our starters fresh," he said. "When these girls come on and play hard we really don't miss a beat. We are just at the beginning of a tough stretch of games so we hope to use the experience and the confidence to get us through the weekend and into next week."
