Last-second shot costly for Vermillion by Jim Prosser Tri-Valley's Brandon Bult grabbed a rebound and put back a lay-up with only one second left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers were edged by Tri-Valley 53-51 in boys' basketball Jan. 9 at Dell Rapids in the second round of the Big Central Tournament.
"We just didn't compete with a winning effort," said Vermillion coach Jason Huska. "We didn't do the little things necessary to win."
The Vermillion varsity lost the game from three-point range, making 5 of 16 from long range compared with 22 of 60 for Tri-Valley. Each team committed only nine turnovers.
The Tanagers trailed 16-11 after the first quarter, trailed 27-24 at halftime, and then trailed 40-39 going into the final period.
The Vermillion varsity saw its record fall to 4-3, while Tri-Valley upped its mark to 5-2.
Vermillion made 16 of 19 from the line. The Tanagers sank 15 of 46 field goal attempts. They made 2 of 5 free throw tries.
