Late rally downs Tanager freshmen by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers fell victim to a fourth-quarter rally and were defeated by the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 27-22 in boys' basketball Jan. 20 at home.

The Vermillion freshmen had led by two after the third quarter.

Ryan Gilbertson and Ryan Scheidel hustled in all aspects of the game.

The Tanagers led 6-4 after the opening period, led 11-10 at halftime, and then held a lead of 18-16 going into the final period.

"We really hustled, but we missed too many easy lay-ups, and we collapsed in the fourth quarter on defense," said Vermillion freshmen coach Kelly Knutson.

The loss dropped Vermillion freshmen to a record of 1-3, while EP-J improved to 3-0.

The Vermillion freshmen hit 0 of 2 three-point tries and connected on 6 of 10 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 8 of 28 field goal attempts, while EP-J was 10 of 27 from the field. EP-J sank 1 of 3 three-point attempts and sank 6 of 9 from the line.
