Now Playing by Josh Gates Go see Big Fish, right now! Movies like Big Fish are the reason I am a movie fanatic. This movie makes all the thousands of hours I've spent, staring at a screen, worthwhile. It's a rare, audacious fairy-tale from the guy who does it best, Tim Burton. You might not know who he is but you definitely know his movies: Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, Sleepy Hollow, and Planet of the Apes.
All of his movies are weird and exciting in an unconventional way and they always deal with strange fantasy worlds. In the cases of Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Ed Wood, the fantasy world exists in the main character's mind. Pee Wee is an adult who acts like a child and Ed Wood is ambitious about talent that he doesn't have.
In that sense, Big Fish is somewhat on the same track but it goes beyond that. It deals with a father and son who don't communicate well because the father always exaggerates the truth which leaves his son feeling like he doesn't really know him.
This is Burton's most emotional film but it still has his creative touch.
Just like the rest of his movies, Big Fish is visually stimulating. It varies from bright and beautiful to dark and menacing and will ultimately leave you with lasting images. It's a perfect blend of fantasy and reality to bring us the most unforgettable fairy-tale in recent history.
