Passive play hurts Vermillion varsity

Passive play hurts Vermillion varsity by Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers were downed by Pipestone 49-36 in girls' basketball Jan. 17 at Lennox in the Ladybird Classic.

"Too many offensive rebounds and passive play tonight really hurt us," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "Scoring only 1 point in the second quarter is unexplainable. We will get back after it at practice next week and see if we can improve."

The Tanagers fell behind 14-10 at the end of the first period, trailed 20-11 at halftime, and then trailed 32-19 after the third period.

Vermillion saw its record fall to 2-6, while Pipestone upped its mark to 5-3.

Vermillion hit 7 of 15 three-pointers and made 9 of 18 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 10 of 32 field goal attempts, while Pipestone was 20 of 37 from the field. Pipestone made 0 of 1 three-point tries and made 9 of 11 free throw tries.

Vermillion was outrebounded 36-20.

Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.

"Annie Roche made four 3-pointers and played really hard again," coach Parish said. "The coaching staff is very happy with her right now; no matter what the score or situation she never hangs her head and continues to play hard. We've had a tough stretch of games lately; it's going to test our character. If everyone can keep their heads up and play with some confidence, good things are just around the corner.

"The old saying goes, 'how you win a game shows something of your character, how you lose a game shows all of it.' We hope to see some positives from the girls as we move into next week," he said.
