S.D. animals not at risk for mad cow by Michelle Herrick PIERRE (CNS) An electronic animal identification program is important to combating mad cow disease, State Veterinarian Sam Holland told legislators Jan. 15.
"In order to respond to this disease, we need a good solid identification program," Holland said.
Holland's not really worried about the BSE spreading across the country even though a cow was found with the disease in Washington state.
"It's not a contagious disease like Foot and Mouth," he said. "The only way that other animals can get it is by eating some of the infected matter."
