Strong first half key to Vermillion victory by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers held on in the second half to defeat the Parkston Trojans 60-52 in boys' basketball Jan. 3 at Parkston. The Tanagers shot 58 percent from the field in the contest.
The Vermillion varsity had led by 18 at halftime in a win ignited by a strong first half.
"We need to learn how to finish a game," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We need to put teams away and down the stretch hit our free throws. We did some nice things offensively and defensively. I'm proud that we didn't fold up. We hung in there and got another road win."
The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 6 of 12 from long distance.
The Tanagers jumped ahead 17-7 after the first quarter, led 36-18 after the second quarter, and then led 47-38 going into the final period.
The Vermillion varsity improved its season mark to 3-2, while Parkston fell to 2-3.
Vermillion hit 12 of 20 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 21 of 36 field goals, while Parkston was 17 of 46 from the field. The Trojans sank 13 of 19 from the line.
