Strong first quarter key to win by Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers beat the Akron-Westfield Westerners 60-44 in girls' basketball Jan. 24 at North Sioux City in the Dakota Valley Classic in a win carried by a strong first quarter.
"Our kids played pretty well today; again it's the tale of two teams," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "This morning we were moving the ball really well and scored 20 first quarter points. Quite a turnaround from last night. From there on we played solid basketball. Our offensive balance is a key to how well we will play."
The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only 7 turnovers and the Westerners committing only 6.
The Tanagers led 20-5 after the first quarter, led 33-18 at halftime, and then led 46-26 going into the final period.
Vermillion improved its season mark to 4-7, while Akron-Westfield fell to 9-3.
Vermillion connected on 6 of 15 three-point tries and connected on 12 of 14 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 21 of 52 field goals, while Akron-Westfield was 15 of 30 from the field. Akron-Westfield made 1 of 5 three-pointers and made 13 of 26 free throw tries.
The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.
"We had three kids in double digits today and Annie Carlson close behind with 9," coach Parish said. "Defensively, we did a better job also; Melissa and Michelle did a great job on the boards limiting second opportunities. If we can play more games like we did today it will be tough to guard us."
