Tanager JV loses in overtime to Parkston by Jim Prosser Parkston's Mandy Bialas tied the score with a short jumper with 19 seconds left in the game and the Vermillion girls' junior varsity Tanagers lost to the Parkston Trojans 28-26 in a tight overtime battle in basketball Jan. 9 at Parkston.
The score was tied 22-22 after regulation.
"Fighting the ever present flu bug, the Red Ladies battled to an overtime loss against a tough Parkston squad," said Vermillion JV coach Lenni Billberg. "Led by six points and 10 boards from Heather Walker, the Tanagers fought long and hard but came up just a few free throws and box outs short of victory."
In the overtime, Kelli Feigen scored all six points for Parkston in the overtime.
The Tanagers trailed 9-8 after the opening period, led 14-13 after the second quarter, and then held a lead of 20-17 going into the fourth quarter.
The loss dropped Vermillion JV to a record of 1-1, while Parkston improved to 2-0.
The Vermillion JV sank 2 of 4 free throw attempts while the Trojans made 6 of 10 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
"Standout play came from Chelsea Gauer, Kinsey Weydert and Annika Sjolie," coach Billberg said. "The three freshmen gave the girls many chances to pull out a win."
