Tanagers beat Trojans in Jan. 8 tourney action by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers defeated the West Central Trojans 47-37 in boys' basketball Jan. 8 at Dell Rapids in the first round of the Big Central Tournament.
Tyler Brown scored 20 points, made 10 of 13 free throws, and contributed four assists.
The game was knotted 9-9 at the end of the first period, the Tanagers led 26-17 after the second period, and then led 36-27 going into the fourth quarter.
The Vermillion varsity held onto the win from the free throw line, making 18 of 25 charity tosses to 5 of 9 for WC. The Tanagers forced 26 WC turnovers to help the victory.
"This was a good win for us against a Big 8 conference foe," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska.
The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 4-1, while WC dropped to 1-4.
Vermillion hit 1 of 14 three-point tries. The Tanagers hit 14 of 45 from the field, while WC was 15 of 35 from the field. WC connected on 2 of 10 three-point tries.
