Tanagers defeat Madison in Big Central play by Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers defeated the Madison Lady Bulldogs 59-50 in girls' basketball Jan. 2 at Vermillion in the first round of the Big Central Tournament.
"This was a very good game for our girls," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "We really played well as a team. Melissa Olson had a tremendous game on the offensive end scoring 19 which could have been more. She had several fantastic moves that rattled around and wouldn't stay down. Once Melissa got rolling, then our perimeter players were able to spot up and get some good looks from beyond the arc."
The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only seven turnovers and the Lady Bulldogs committing only five.
The Tanagers took the lead 13-11 after the first quarter, and margins of 17-11 and 18-12 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 48-34 going into the final period.
Vermillion now has a record of 2-1, while MHS fell to 0-4.
Vermillion connected on 8 of 18 three-point attempts and sank 9 of 17 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 21 of 47 field goal attempts, while MHS was 17 of 44 from the field. MHS hit 0 of 1 three-pointers and connected on 16 of 29 from the line.
The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.
"Annie Roche started to shoot the ball well and Jackie Thomas showed why she was an all conference performer last year by hitting 5-9 from downtown," coach Parish said. "Madison is scrappy and a physical team and kept battling back; Annie Carlson did a lot of little things for us tonight that kept us leading. She is a player that can contribute to our success without putting huge numbers on the stat sheet. Our coaching staff was very pleased with the win and the effort."
