Tanagers fall to Pipestone in 4th quarter rally by Jim Prosser Even with an excellent team performance, the Vermillion Tanagers ended up on the wrong side of a fourth-quarter rally and lost an upset bid against Pipestone Area 68-62 in boys' basketball Jan. 10 at Tri-Valley in the third round of the Big Central Tournament.
The Vermillion varsity had led by one after the third quarter.
"I was pleased with our effort against Pipestone," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We competed well with a good basketball team."
The Tanagers fell behind 15-10 at the end of the first period, trailed 31-29 after the second quarter, and then led 43-42 after the third period.
The loss dropped Vermillion varsity to a record of 4-4, while Pipestone Area improved to 6-2.
The Vermillion varsity hit 3 of 11 three-point attempts and connected on 15 of 22 from the line. The Tanagers hit 22 of 46 field goals, while Pipestone Area was 26 of 51 from the field. Pipestone Area sank 4 of 14 three-point attempts and made 12 of 18 from the line.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
"This was an important tournament for us," coach Huska said. "It showed what we need to improve in order to be a contender. We struggled shooting in the first couple games. When we learn how to finish we will be tough to beat. This was a great learning experience."
