Tanagers prevail in overtime battle 71-65 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers defeated the Lennox Orioles 71-65 in an overtime battle in boys' basketball Jan. 19 at Lennox.
The score was tied 60-60 after regulation.
This action featured all junior players on both the Vermillion and Lennox squads.
The Vermillion JV improved its record to 5-1, while LHS dropped to 3-3.
Vermillion's Matt Preszler scored 18 points in a breakout performance.
"Preszler was very aggressive; that is the way we need him to play," said Vermillion JV coach Jon Ruevers.
The Tanagers led 16-14 at the end of the first period, trailed 36-28 after the second period, and then trailed 46-45 going into the fourth quarter.
The Orioles tried to keep things close from three-point range, hitting 4 of 8 from long distance.
"I am very pleased," said coach Ruevers. "Overall, it was a great effort for the entire game. We never gave up and performed the best in overtime."
In the fourth quarter, Chris Teigen stole the ball at half court with 30 seconds left to tie the game.
"Chris passed the ball ahead to Matt Preszler for a lay-up," coach Ruevers said.
The Vermillion JV connected on 12 of 24 from the line. The Tanagers sank 25 of 47 field goal attempts, while LHS was 19 of 45 from the field. The Orioles connected on 11 of 15 free throw tries.
The close win had several contributors to the cause.
"Vermillion had four players score in double figures," coach Ruevers said.
