Teams slated for play in Big Central tourney

Teams slated for play in Big Central tourney by Jim Prosser Near the end of last year's basketball season, a committee was formed by several conferences with the intention of developing a tournament to be played during the 2004 season. The result of those meetings created the "Big Central" eight team tournaments for both boys and girls.

The format will be the same as the state tournaments (i.e. play for all eight places) and will be played in six different locales.

The schedule for the girls' division was set for Jan. 2, 3, and 10 and the boys' tournament dates are January 8, 9, and 10. The eight teams involved are Dell Rapids, Flandreau, Lennox, Madison, Pipestone area, Tri-Valley, Vermillion, and West Central.

Sites for the first two rounds of the girls' division are Vermillion and Flandreau and the final day will be held in Hartford (West Central). Teams at the Vermillion site are Dell Rapids, West Central, Madison, and Vermillion while Lennox, Tri-Valley, Pipestone, and Flandreau will face off in the "north" section.

The boys are scheduled to play in Dell Rapids with Vermillion facing West Central and Tri-Valley meeting Dell Rapids; and � at Pipestone area having Madison vs. Flandreau and Lennox against Pipestone(first two rounds); then the finals will be held at Tri-Valley.

As you can surmise, the tournaments have had some games already completed in the girls' division.

Here are the first round results: Dell Rapids defeated West Central 47-45; Vermillion defeated Madison 59-50; Lennox defeated Tri-Valley 59-48; and Pipestone defeated Flandreau 61-30.

In the second round: West Central defeated Madison 63-30; Dell Rapids defeated Vermillion 57-43; Tri-Valley defeated Flandreau 72-45; and Pipestone defeated Lennox 44-41.

The schedule for the West Central site is as follows: 1 p.m. � Madison vs. Flandreau; 2:30 p.m. West Central vs. Tri-Valley; 6 p.m. Vermillion vs. Lennox; 7:30 p.m. Dell Rapids vs. Pipestone Area.
