USD track and field has strong performance The University of South Dakota men's and women's track and field team recorded 15 titles in a solid performance at the Bill Hillenbrand Invitational held Jan. 9-10 at the DakotaDome.
The USD women's team had 10 titles, including seven on Saturday. The men's team won two events on Friday and three more on Saturday. Both teams recorded numerous top five finishes.
In Saturday's action, USD freshman Heidi Muellenberg, Redfield, captured the 60-meter title, clocking a time of 7.94. Coyote freshman Stephanie Gebhart, Elkton, was second in 8.03 in that race and then won the 200 meter dash in 26.03 with Meullenberg, third, in 26.33.
Coyote Senior Emily Fox, Sioux Falls, won the 400-meter dash in 59.74 while sophomore Meghann Reifenrath Mason City, IA, won the 800 meter run in 2:26.72.
In addition, junior Marci Miller, Rapid City, won the pole vault with a vault of 11'09''. Brianne Vette-Edwards, Spearfish, won her second title of the meet, taking the long jump title in 18'07''.75. On Friday, Vette won the pentathlon with 3,601 points.
Tiffany Barber, Chester, was first in the shot put with a toss of 43'08''.50 on Saturday. She was third in the weight toss with a throw of 48'05''.50 on Friday.
Other wins by USD women's track and field team members on Friday included Amber Friedrich, who won the 5000m run in 18:12.37 while Kassidi Myrick, Winner, captured the women's weight throw with a toss of 53'03''.75.
The USD men's team had five titles over the weekend, showing strong performances in the sprints. Eric Kittles, Rapid City, won the 60-meter dash with a clocking of 7.02. In that same race, freshman Stefan Logan, Miami, FL, was second in 7.04 while freshman David Coley, Omaha, NE, finished third in 7.08. Coley was also second in the 200 meter dash in 22.78 with Kittles third in 22.98 and Merritt Groh, Sioux City, IA, taking fourth in 23.07. Groh also took second in the 400 meter dash, clocking 51.35.
USD freshman Tyler Wetering, Sioux Falls, won the 3,000 meter run in 9:01.35.
Also for the men, Chad Erling, Bellevue, NE, and Jason Briggs, Mitchell, finished second (1:06.85) and third (1:09.10), respectively, in the 500 meter run.
Freshman Derek Gearman, Lennox, was second in the high jump, going 6'06'' on Saturday. On Friday, Gearman was third in the triple jump with 45'10''.
Junior Sam Pribyl, Webster, was second in the pole vault with a jump of 15' on Saturday.
Junior Shane Roder, Linn Grove, IA, was second in the mile run in 4:24.79 and senior Wayne Reynolds, Omaha, NE, took third in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.45 in competition on Saturday.
On Friday, the Coyote men won the men's 4x200m relay in 1:32.58 and the men's 4x800m relay in 8:15.45. In addition, Jim Vahrenkamp, Rapid City, took second in the men,s pentathlon with 3,279 points.
USD's Jordan Davis, San Antonio, TX, finished second in the triple jump, going 46'02''.75. USD's Nick Hagemann, New Vienna, IA; was fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 50'00''.50.
