Vermillion displays superb team effort by Jim Prosser In a superb team effort, the Vermillion Tanagers shot down the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 69-47 in boys' basketball Jan. 20 at home. The Tanagers shot 53 percent from the field in the contest.
"Our defense was a total team effort," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We had guys diving after the ball and really hustling. We finally shot the ball the way we are capable of doing. The kids had confidence and they knocked them down. This was a good win for us."
The contest was well-played, with each team committing only 9 turnovers.
The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 9 of 14 from long distance.
The Tanagers took the lead 22-13 after the first quarter, and margins of 18-11 and 15-12 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 55-36 going into the final period.
Both teams now have records of 6-4.
The Vermillion varsity connected on 10 of 15 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 25 of 47 field goals, while EP-J was 18 of 45 from the field. The Huskies made 11 of 14 from the line.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.
"Chad and Chris Teigen each contributed to the team with 5 and 4 rebounds respectively," coach Huska said. "They did a great job of boxing out. We got contributions from several players. We need to do that to be successful."
