Vermillion downed by Dell Rapids 57-43 Jan. 2 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers were downed by Dell Rapids 57-43 in girls' basketball Jan. 2 at Vermillion in the second round of the Big Central Tournament after falling prey to a 21-9 second-quarter blitz.

"Dell Rapids is a very good team," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "I look for them to be ranked as one of the top teams in the state very soon. They are well coached and their kids took advantage of any mistakes we made. Our girls played very hard but made some mental mistakes that caused us problems. If we cut out a few mistakes here and there we are right in the game with them. They switched defenses often; our hesitation and lack of recognition was really the difference in the game."

The Tanagers jumped in front 14-9 after the first quarter, trailed 30-23 at halftime, and then trailed 42-30 after the third quarter.

The loss dropped Vermillion to a record of 2-2, while DRHS improved to 5-1.

Vermillion connected on 7 of 16 three-point attempts and hit 6 of 11 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 15 of 36 field goal attempts, while DRHS was 20 of 52 from the field. DRHS sank 6 of 15 three-pointers and connected on 11 of 18 from the line.

Vermillion was outrebounded 35-23.

The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.

"Jackie Thomas continues to shoot the ball well; she again went 5-9 from 3 point range," Coach Parish said. "Annie Carlson did what she does best again tonight. Whatever we are lacking, she picks up the slack for us. Tonight we were having trouble putting the ball in the basket so she was more aggressive and ended the night with 14.

"Defensively the effort was there but a few too many offensive rebounds gave Dell Rapids extra opportunities that came back to haunt us. Michelle and Melissa Olson did a nice job on the boards with 5 and 6 respectively," he said. "Ellen Odson played well for us this weekend; she gave us some valuable minutes off the bench handling the basketball and playing very good defense."
