Vermillion varsity tops Pierce in fourth quarter by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers pulled away in the last stanza to top the Pierce, NE Arrows 66-58 in boys' basketball Jan. 13 at home.

The Vermillion varsity had led by only two heading into the final quarter.

"I'm really pleased about how we just stayed after it defensively," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We caused them to get tired and that was the difference. They came out on fire but we never gave up.

"Offensively, we moved well without the ball and got great shots. This was a good win against a very good team," he said.

The Tanagers fell behind 23-14 after the first quarter, led 30-28 at halftime, and then led 46-44 going into the final period.

The Vermillion varsity improved its season mark to 5-4, while Pierce fell to 6-4.

Vermillion connected on 3 of 9 three-point tries and sank 13 of 18 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 25 of 46 from the field, while Pierce was 20 of 46 from the field. Pierce connected on 7 of 24 three-pointers and sank 11 of 21 free throw attempts.
