VHS gymnasts improve scores at Yankton by Jim Prosser The Tanager gymnasts had a team point total 123 in the return dual meet held at the Vermillion gym on Thursday, Jan. 22. The AA Yankton Gazelles won the meet with a 130.75 score while the young Tanager girls improved their prior scores of the season with some fine performances.

Vermillion participants' scores in each event are:

Ariel Hofman, 8.35 (third); Sarah Christopherson, 8.1 (fourth); Sarah Gregg, 6.9 (eighth); Tristen Upward, 7.4 (sixth), Brittney Epping, 4.75; Amy Mart, 6.9 (eighth).

Hofman, 8.3 (third); Christopherson, 6.7; Rachel Lorenz, 6.9 (10th); Gregg, 6.5; Brittney Gilkyson, 7.8 (fourth); Gregg, 6.9 (eighth).

Floor exercise

Hofman 8.0 (fourth); Christopherson, 8.05 (third); Lorenz, 5.7 (ninth); Upward, 6.4 (eighth).

Vault

Hofman, 8.8 (third); Christopherson, 9.0 (second); Gilkyson, 8.7 (fourth); Theresa Ring, 6.5 (12th); Bethany Sand, 7.2 (11th).

All-around

Hofman 34.45 (third); Christopherson, 31.85 (fourth).

"No negative vibes on this night," said Coach Mark Upward. "We are really starting to see positive results from the changes being implemented in some of the routines.

"We had great performances from Ariel Hofman, Sarah Christopherson and Tristen Upward, on beam; and Hofman, and Brittney Gilkyson on bars. Rachel Lorenz is an important addition to our floor exercise event," he said.

In the JV section, Callie Sorenson placed third in all around with scores of 6.8 on bars, 4.55 on beam, 2.4 on floor, and 6.3 on vault. Christina Wellsfry had the Tanager JV's second place score of 6.0 on bars, and Emily Renner was fourth in all-around with an 18.95.

Her indivdual event scores were: bars � 5.9; beam � 3.85; vault � 6.2; and floor � 3.0.

Also, Kristen Welk had a seventh place 4.8 on bars. Besides Sorenson, DeNell Dykstra was eighth on beam with a 3.95. Krystal Clark had 4.4 on floor, and Stacey Joy, 3.8 as they placed seventh and eighth.

Anna Moos shared eighth place on vault with Sorenson's 6.3 score. Sixteen young Vermillion gymnasts competed in the JV division.

The middle school division had 12 Redbird participants. Some competitors were scored in both JV and MS sections. On bars: Sorenson and Renner were joined with Tia Kreier (4.5), and Jennifer Kendall (4.2).

On beam; Sorenson, Dykstra, and Renner were complemented by Rachel Lorenz (3.6), and Heather Zimmerman (3.25). Emily Tracy competed on floor (2.7) along with Renner and Sorenson. And Sorenson (6.3), Moos (6.3), Renner (6.2), and Zimmerman (6.2), Kreier (6.1), Tracy (5.8) and Kendall (5.7) were joined by Loraine Walsh (5.1) on the vault.
