Bohlmann receives special sports award by Lindsay Nelson Women athletes around the world were given their day to truly shine on Feb. 4.
In honor of women athletes, Feb. 4 was celebrated as National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Wakonda High School's female coaches chose Chelsa Bohlmann as their recipient of this year's award.
Chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1986, this day was made to honor female athletic success and to recognize the significance of sports and fitness participation for all girls and women. Now nearly 20 years later, NGWSD is still going strong and thousands of sports related people, students, and parents across the country are showing their support of the day and of this year's theme, "Play Fair."
NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports.
On Feb. 9 Wakonda honored its female athletes. The Wakonda Warriorettes hosted the Alcester Hudson Cubs and right before the varsity starting line up, coach Stacy Huber told the fans all about National Girls and Women Sports Day and announced that Bohlmann was chosen as Wakonda's recipient of the National Girls and Women Sports award.
Bohlmann was chosen based on exemplifying qualities of excellence in sports skills, leadership, self discipline and perseverance. She will represent Wakonda in the Elite 15 recognition, where 15 young women are chosen from South Dakota to represent their state at Nationals.
