Freshman Tanagers lose their season opener by Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshman Tanagers were topped by the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 35-22 in girls' basketball Jan. 20 at Vermillion as the winners held the lead after each quarter.

"I was proud of the way the team hustled and played with heart for our first competition," said VHS assistant freshmen coach Heather Nelson.

The Tanagers fell behind 12-4 after the opening period, trailed 19-7 after the second period, and then trailed 25-12 going into the final period.

The loss dropped VHS freshmen to a record of 0-1, while EP-J improved to 1-0.

The VHS freshmen sank 1 of 10 from the line while the Huskies connected on 0 of 2 free throw attempts.
