Gauer leads freshmen to their first season win by Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers overpowered Alcester-Hudson 35-15 in girls' basketball Jan. 29 at Vermillion in a game where the Tanagers held the Cubs to only five field goals.

"I am proud of the team's play tonight," said VHS freshmen Coach Heather Walker. "Chelsea led the team and everyone worked well together to get things done. They did all the little things which led to victory."

The Tanagers forced 20 Alcester-Hudson turnovers to help the victory.

The Tanagers took the lead 11-6 after the first quarter, and margins of 11-2 and 5-4 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 27-12 going into the final period.

The VHS freshmen improved their record to 1-3, while Alcester-Hudson dropped to 0-3.

VHS connected on 7 of 13 from the line while the Cubs made 5 of 9 free throw tries.
