Strong first quarter key to Tanager victory by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Dakota Valley Panthers 61-52 in boys' basketball Feb. 10 at Dakota Valley in a win carried by a strong first quarter.

Tyler Brown scored 14 points, and had 3 steals and 3 assists.

"Tyler went 4 for 4 from the free throw line in the game's final two minutes," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska.

The Tanagers jumped ahead 21-8 after the opening period, led 33-20 at halftime, and then led 46-33 going into the final period.

Vermillion held onto the win from the free throw line, making 22 of 33 charity tosses to 6 of 10 for Dakota Valley.

"We were aggressive against their zone and played good team defense," said coach Huska. "We got good shots against the zone and hit the shots we're good at. We needed this win to get us back on track. Down the stretch we hit some big free throws to seal the win."

The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 11-6, while Dakota Valley dropped to 5-9.

Vermillion sank 1 of 7 three-point attempts. The Tanagers sank 19 of 43 field goal attempts, while Dakota Valley was 21 of 52 from the field. Dakota Valley sank 4 of 17 three-pointers.
