Tanager comeback attempt falls short by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers fell short in a second-half comeback and lost to the Madison Bulldogs 43-35 in boys' basketball Feb. 7 at home after falling prey to a first-quarter blitz.
The Vermillion freshmen had trailed by 18 going into the final period.
Jeff Donnelly scored 15 points and made five steals.
"Jeff's defense helped us claw back into the game after the big first quarter deficit," said Vermillion freshmen coach Kelly Knutson.
The Tanagers fell behind 22-8 after the first quarter, trailed 31-16 at halftime, and then trailed 40-22 after the third period.
The Tanagers tried to stay in the game from three-point range, hitting 4 of 8 from long distance, but it wasn't enough.
"After a terrible first quarter, we played exceptionally well," said coach Knutson. "We just got too far behind in the beginning."
The loss dropped Vermillion freshmen to a record of 2-5, while MHS improved to 3-4.
Vermillion freshmen made 5 of 8 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 13 of 37 field goals, while MHS was 14 of 38 from the field. The Bulldogs hit 13 of 14 from the line.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
"Ryan Gilbertson had another stellar game with his good defense and rebounding," coach Knutson said. "His nine points were a big help, also."
