Tanager freshmen defeat Dakota Valley Panthers 28-21 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshman Tanagers rallied to top the Dakota Valley Panthers 28-21 in girls' basketball Feb. 10 at Dakota Valley.
The VHS freshmen had trailed by one at halftime.
"Great team effort to thwart a much larger physical team," said VHS freshmen coach Heather Walker. "Annika Sjolie and Brittni Stewart set the tone defensively which carried us through."
The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only 3 turnovers and the Panthers committing only 6.
The Tanagers trailed 10-7 at the end of the first period, trailed 12-11 at halftime, and then held a lead of 20-18 after the third period.
The VHS freshmen improved its record to 4-4, while Dakota Valley dropped to 3-6.
The VHS freshmen sank 4 of 11 free throw attempts while the Panthers made 3 of 5 free throw tries.
