Tanager junior varsity tops West Central 44-30 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls' junior varsity Tanagers pulled away in the second half to top the West Central Trojans 44-30 in basketball Feb. 12 at Vermillion.
The Vermillion JV had led by only four in the third period.
The Vermillion JV's record improved to 6-5. The West Central season mark fell to 5-6.
"A great culmination of a season leading into our final game," said Vermillion JV coach Lenni Billberg. "It was a total team effort sparked by the return of Annie Carlson."
The Tanagers forced 20 West Central turnovers to give a boost to the victory.
The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 6 of 12 from long distance.
The Tanagers fell behind 7-6 at the end of the first period, led 21-17 at halftime, and then held a lead of 31-22 after the third quarter.
The Vermillion JV made 8 of 16 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 15 of 37 from the field, while West Central was 13 of 33 from the field. The Trojans sank 2 of 4 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.
"Brittney Babb's three quarter rebounding totaled seven, and Kinsey Weydert and Chelsea Gauer each had four assists," coach Billberg said.
