Tanager JV roars back to beat Madison by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers roared back in the fourth quarter to top the Madison Bulldogs 55-50 in boys' basketball Feb. 7 at home. The Tanagers shot 50 percent from the field in the contest.
The Vermillion JV had trailed by 12 going into the final period in a win capped by a 20-3 fourth-quarter surge.
Randy Kabambi scored 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Andrew Pier contributed 15 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists.
"In the fourth quarter, Pier was 5 for 6 and Kabambi 3 for 4 from the free throw line to clinch the win," said Vermillion JV Coach Jon Ruevers.
The Tanagers trailed 12-11 after the opening period, trailed 26-23 at halftime, and then trailed 47-35 after the third period.
Vermillion JV held onto the win from the free throw line, making 19 of 33 charity tosses to 8 of 10 for MHS.
"Great victory," said coach Ruevers. "The guys never gave up. It is a credit to them to stay with the game plan and never give up."
Vermillion improved its record to 7-4, while MHS dropped to 7-3.
Vermillion sank 0 of 3 three-point tries. The Tanagers connected on 18 of 36 from the field, while MHS was 17 of 44 from the field. MHS sank 8 of 18 three-point tries.
