Oberle scored 6 points, and he and his teammates were unable to keep Madison from gaining control of the game in the fourth quarter. by Jim Prosser After three hard-fought periods, the Vermillion Tanagers finally saw victory slip away and were downed by the Madison Bulldogs 53-46 in boys' basketball Feb. 7 at home.
The teams battled back and forth until MHS took control in the final period. The Vermillion varsity had led by seven after the third quarter.
"Tonight was very frustrating," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We were fighting ourselves. We shot 30 percent from the field, 18 percent from three-point range and 53 percent from the line.
"You're not going to win many games when you shoot like that. We had a seven point lead going into the fourth quarter but we didn't take care of the ball. We had eight turnovers in the second half. We need to be more disciplined down the stretch," he said.
The Tanagers led 16-9 at the end of the first period, the score was 26-26 at halftime, and the Tanagers held a lead of 40-33 going into the final period.
The loss dropped Vermillion varsity to a record of 10-6, while MHS improved to 4-9.
Vermillion sank 3 of 16 three-pointers and connected on 15 of 28 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 14 of 36 from the field, while MHS was 18 of 41 from the field. MHS sank 4 of 11 three-point attempts and sank 13 of 21 from the line.
