Tanagers crush Arlington varsity 68-34 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers crushed the Arlington Cardinals 68-34 in girls' basketball Jan. 30 at Arlington as the winners steadily pulled away in the contest.
"Another good start was the key to this game," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "After a long road trip there is always concern about how you will start the game. Our upper classmen did a nice job of getting everyone focused on the task at hand so we didn't have any mental letdowns to start the game."
The Tanagers took the lead 15-7 after the first quarter, and margins of 20-9 and 22-13 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 57-29 going into the final period.
Vermillion improved its record to 6-8, while Arlington dropped to 2-13.
Vermillion sank 4 of 11 three-pointers and made 14 of 24 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 25 of 53 field goals, while Arlington was 10 of 52 from the field. Arlington hit 0 of 3 three-point attempts and connected on 14 of 25 free throw attempts.
Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.
"Michelle Olson had another good game; she's beginning to be more aggressive on offense and continuing to be solid on defense," coach Parish said. "Two other people that played very well off the bench are Alisha O'Connor and Heather Walker. They both contributed significant minutes and really played hard.
"The thing that we were most proud of as coaches is that we started to get over some mental hurdles. When a game gets out of hand like that it's easy to lose focus and not execute the way we would like," he said. "There was a short stretch in the middle of the third quarter where we started to lose our focus, but again our upperclassmen stepped in and showed some leadership by getting after some players and regaining our focus."
