Tanagers defeat EP-J in first round of districts by Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers shot down the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 49-28 in girls' basketball Feb. 23 at Elk Point in the first round of the District 8A Tournament in a win carried by a strong first quarter.

"Tonight was the finest defensive effort we have put together all year," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "The girls did a great job of cutting off dribble penetration and a much improved job of rebounding."

The Tanagers took the lead 14-2 after the first quarter, and margins of 11-8 and 18-7 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 43-17 going into the final period.

Vermillion improved its season mark to 8-11, while EP-J fell to 5-14.

Vermillion connected on 5 of 12 three-pointers and hit 4 of 6 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 20 of 47 field goals, while EP-J was 10 of 32 from the field. EP-J made 0 of 4 three-point tries and made 8 of 15 from the line.

Vermillion held a 32-17 edge on the boards.

A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.

"Annie Roche had a tremendous game, leading us in scoring, rebounding, assists and only one turnover," coach Parish said. "She has really started to develop into a complete player that is demonstrating some leadership skills."
