Tanagers escape upset bid, beat the Cardinals by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers escaped an upset bid and downed the Arlington Cardinals 48-40 in boys' basketball Jan. 31 at Arlington. The Tanagers shot 48 percent from the field in the contest.

"I was pleased with our performance after a long road trip to Arlington," said Vermillion JV coach Jon Ruevers. "A win on the road is always good."

The contest was well-played, with each team committing only 7 turnovers.

The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 5 of 8 from long distance.

The Tanagers led 13-6 after the first quarter, led 27-21 at halftime, and then led 37-27 going into the final period.

Vermillion improved its season mark to 6-3, while Arlington fell to 8-2.

Vermillion connected on 6 of 12 from the line. The Tanagers made 19 of 40 field goals, while Arlington was 16 of 35 from the field. The Cardinals hit 6 of 9 from the line.

The Tanagers had several important contributors in the close win.

"Andrew Pier played very well on both ends of the floor," Coach Ruevers said. "Mike Hanson gave an excellent effort on the defensive end."
