Tanagers overpower Alcester-Hudson Cubs by Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers overpowered the Alcester-Hudson Cubs 54-37 in girls' basketball Jan 29 at Vermillion in a win carried by a strong first quarter.
"We really got off to a good start tonight," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "Alcester's guards struggled with our pressure. This was a good game for us to gain some confidence and try out different lineup combinations with some injuries that we are dealing with."
The Tanagers picked up the victory in spite of committing 21 turnovers.
The Tanagers took the lead 19-7 after the first quarter, and margins of 13-10 and 13-6 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 45-23 going into the final period.
Vermillion improved its season mark to 5-8, while Alcester-Hudson fell to 0-10.
Vermillion sank 5 of 11 three-point attempts and hit 19 of 28 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 15 of 43 field goal attempts, while Alcester-Hudson was 12 of 30 from the field. Alcester-Hudson made 1 of 5 three-point attempts and made 12 of 17 free throw tries.
A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.
"We had great balance tonight with three girls in double figures in limited minutes," coach Parish said. "We were happy with everyone but especially Michelle Olson and Kayla Mollet. They both had to change their roles due to injuries and both did a great job. Kayla is someone that I am very proud of right now; she has really started to understand her role on the team and does a lot of things for us that don't show up on the stat sheet. "Kayla always doesn't need to score points for us to do a good job; she can contribute defensively and make good decisions with the basketball. Michelle had to play more minutes on the perimeter in this game and did very well. As soon as she becomes confident in her own abilities she will be a very good player inside and outide for us," he said.
