Tanagers topped by Wagner 64-51 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers were topped by Wagner 64-51 in girls' basketball Jan 27 at Wagner after falling prey to a first-quarter blitz.
"Wagner is a great team," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "They jumped out to a big first quarter lead and we were fighting our way back all night long. Annie Carlson hurt her knee tonight; we will have it evaluated and see where she is tomorrow. Other girls stepped in and kept us in the game despite her absence. The final dagger was the way that Wagner shot free throws tonight. They were patient and continued to take the ball at us so we had to foul them. 34-41 from the line is a terrific team effort."
Vermillion lost the game from the free throw line, making 12 of 18 charity tosses compared with 34 of 41 for Wagner. The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only eight turnovers and WHS committing only nine.
The Tanagers fell behind 20-7 after the first quarter, trailed 33-20 at halftime, and then trailed 51-37 going into the final period.
The loss dropped Vermillion to a record of 4-8, while Wagner improved to 9-2.
Vermillion connected on 5 of 18 three-pointers. The Tanagers sank 17 of 58 field goals, while Wagner was 14 of 45 from the field. Wagner connected on 2 of 2 three-point attempts.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
"Jackie Thomas and Annie Roche played well for us making baskets and attempting to pressure their guards into some turnovers," coach Parish said. "The girls played really hard again tonight; we are so close to beating some of these teams. Right now it's just a matter of us learning how to win games, we need to make plays to disrupt our opponents' runs and make plays to keep our own going."
