Trojans fall to Tanager freshmen by Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers downed the West Central Trojans 21-15 in girls' basketball Feb. 12 at Vermillion.
Chelsea Gauer scored 11 points.
"She showed her leadership by taking control over the game," said VHS freshmen coach Heather Walker.
The Tanagers fell behind 6-4 after the opening period, led 14-10 after the second quarter, and then held a lead of 20-10 going into the final period.
"Even though some of the girls did not score as many points as they would like, it was the rebounds, steals, and overall aggressiveness the team showed that made the difference in the game," said Coach Walker.
The VHS freshmen improved its record to 5-4, while West Central dropped to 5-6.
The VHS freshmen sank 2 of 4 three-point tries and hit 7 of 10 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 6 of 27 field goal attempts, while West Central was 7 of 31 from the field. West Central hit 0 of 5 three-point tries and made 1 of 6 free throw tries.
The Tanagers had several important contributors in the close win.
"Our girls played hard and took it a strong and aggressive West Central team," coach Walker said.
