Upward receives Friend of Reading Recovery Award

Upward receives Friend of Reading Recovery Award Vermillion Assistant Elementary Principal Mark Upward has been presented the Friend of Reading Recovery Award.

Janet Petersen, instructor/teacher leader, curriculum and instruction at The University of South Dakota, presented Upward with the honor earlier this month.

Petersen said Upward has been a force behind the implementation of the Reading Recovery Program for the past seven years.

The program is targeted for first graders to prevent some of these children from experiencing a cycle of failure in learning the literacy skills of reading and writing.

Upward's Reading Recovery teachers at Austin include Gwen Hall, Beth Hansen and JoAnn Stockland. All three teachers took a year-long graduate course at USD to learn how to administer the program to first graders struggling with reading and writing skills.

Petersen said Upward has carefully followed the program standards and guidelines and worked closely with The University Training Center to achieve maximum success with the Reading Recovery program at Austin.

Upward will receive further recognition next fall at the 10th annual Reading Recovery regional conference in Sioux Falls.
