Vermillion freshmen defeated by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were defeated by the Beresford Watchdogs 41-31 in boys' basketball Feb. 3 at home as the Tanagers shot just 35 percent from the field.

"We played pretty well defensively, but they had the hot hand," said Vermillion freshmen coach Kelly Knutson. "Everything they put up went in. Offensively, we didn't play very well at home."

Both teams were sharp from three-point range, with the Tanagers 5 of 8 and the Watchdogs 3 of 6.

The Tanagers jumped in front 9-8 after the opening period, trailed 20-16 after the second quarter, and then trailed 32-22 after the third period.

Vermillion saw its record fall to 1-4, while Beresford upped its mark to 2-2.

Vermillion hit 2 of 10 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 12 of 34 field goal attempts, while Beresford was 14 of 31 from the field. The Watchdogs made 10 of 18 free throw attempts.

Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.

"Andrew Pearson, Bobby Dykstra and Ryan Gilbertson played well under the basket defensively," coach Knutson said.
