Vermillion freshmen fall to Gayville-Volin by Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers fell victim to a fourth-quarter rally and were downed by the Gayville-Volin junior varsity Raiders 29-20 in girls' basketball Feb. 17 at Gayville after sinking under a 12-0 final-period deficit.
The VHS freshmen had led by three after the third quarter.
Chelsea Gauer scored 8 points, and Kinsey Weydert contributed 4.
The Tanagers jumped in front 7-4 after the opening period, led 13-12 at halftime, and then led 20-17 after the third period.
"The fourth quarter is what hurt us in the game," said VHS freshmen Coach Heather Walker. "We played well at times, but could not put it together for the whole game."
The loss dropped VHS freshmen to a record of 5-5, while Gayville-Volin improved to 6-5.
VHS hit 0 of 0 free throw tries while the Raiders connected on 7 of 8 free throw tries.
Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.
"I have been impressed with how this team has grown," Coach Walker said. "We didn't start off our season great, but I am more than satisfied at how this team made themselves better each and every day."
