Vermillion freshmen overpower Watchdogs by Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers overpowered the Beresford Watchdogs 36-16 in girls' basketball Feb. 3 at Vermillion in a win carried by a strong first quarter.

Brittni Stewart scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds.

"Brittni stepped up and played one of her best games," said VHS freshmen coach Heather Walker.

The Tanagers jumped ahead 13-0 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 27-5 at halftime, and then led 30-13 after the third quarter.

"Our defense has improved and we're showing more teamwork in game situations," said coach Walker.

The VHS freshmen now have a record of 2-4, while Beresford fell to 1-5.

VHS freshmen 1 of 4 three-point tries and hit 1 of 8 from the line. The Tanagers sank 17 of 35 field goals, while Beresford was 7 of 25 from the field. Beresford connected on 0 of 3 three-point tries and sank 2 of 5 free throw attempts.
