Vermillion sixth graders take second place The Vermillion sixth-grade boys, sponsored by Edward Jones Investments, placed second at the Alcester Youth Tournament on Jan. 29-31.
Games began Thursday evening with the Vermillion boys defeating Rock Valley Christian by a score of 38-28.
Play resumed Saturday and victory was in the cares for the sixth-grade boys as they won their second game scoring a team-high 55 points over the Canton C-Hawks. A tough defense held the C-Hawks to just 10 points.
The Edward Jones team came up short in the championship game as they were defeated by Rock Valley Orange Crush 50-40.
The weekend scoring was led by Cole Andre with 37 points, followed closely by Garrett Smith-Keller with 33 points. Aaron Steele scored 23, Jordan Robinson and Nick Anglin both had 16 points, Tim Tigert chalked up 6 points and Michael Walker added 2 points.
Team rebounds were led by Walker with 20. Smith-Keller brought down 16, Steele grabbed 13, Anglin and Robinson both snagged nine, Tigert brought down eight, and Andre snatched two.
Steele led the team in take-aways with nine. Andre grabbed eight and Robinson hustled for seven.
Smith-Keller had four steals, Walker and Anglin each contributed three, and Tigert had two. Team assists were led by Robinson and Andre each with 10, and Steele with seven.
Highlights of the weekend included Anglin with a personal best scoring 12 points in one game. Robinson had his personal best game scoring 10 points.
Balanced scoring came from all team members as they scored a three-game record high 133 points. The Edward Jones team is coached by Curt Robinson and Kent Andre.
